Getting Started with MileLog
This guide will help you set up MileLog and start tracking your mileage in just a few minutes.
Installation
- Download MileLog from the App Store
- Open the app after installation
Initial Setup
When you first open MileLog, you'll need to complete a few setup steps:
1. Location Permissions
MileLog needs location access to track your trips:
- When prompted, tap "Allow" to grant location permissions
- Select "Always Allow" for automatic trip detection
- You can adjust these settings later in your device's Settings app
2. Motion & Fitness Access
For accurate trip detection:
- When prompted, allow access to Motion & Fitness data
- This helps MileLog distinguish between different types of movement
3. Notifications (Optional)
Enable notifications to:
- Get alerts when trips are detected
- Receive reminders to classify trips
- Stay informed about your mileage totals
Setting Your Preferences
Vehicle Information
- Go to Settings > Vehicles
- Tap "Add Vehicle"
- Enter your vehicle details:
- Make and model
- Year
- Starting odometer reading (optional)
- Fuel efficiency (optional)
Mileage Rates
MileLog comes pre-configured with current IRS and CRA rates, but you can customize them:
- Go to Settings > Rates
- Select the rate type (Business, Medical, Charity, etc.)
- Enter your custom rate if needed
Recording Your First Trip
Automatic Trip Recording
- Simply drive as you normally would
- MileLog will detect when you're driving and record the trip
- After your trip ends, you'll receive a notification (if enabled)
- Open the app to review and classify the trip
Manual Trip Entry
If you need to add a trip manually:
- Tap the "+" button on the Trips screen
- Enter trip details:
- Date and time
- Starting location
- Ending location
- Trip purpose
- Distance
- Tap "Save" to add the trip to your log
Classifying Trips
After a trip is recorded:
- Open the app and go to the Trips tab
- Tap on the trip you want to classify
- Select the appropriate category (Business, Personal, etc.)
- Add any notes or tags
- Tap "Save" to update the trip
Generating Reports
To create a mileage report:
- Go to the Reports tab
- Select the report type (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, etc.)
- Choose the date range
- Tap "Generate Report"
- Use the share button to export, print, or email your report
