Getting Started with MileLog

This guide will help you set up MileLog and start tracking your mileage in just a few minutes.

Installation

  1. Download MileLog from the App Store
  2. Open the app after installation

Initial Setup

When you first open MileLog, you'll need to complete a few setup steps:

1. Location Permissions

MileLog needs location access to track your trips:

  1. When prompted, tap "Allow" to grant location permissions
  2. Select "Always Allow" for automatic trip detection
  3. You can adjust these settings later in your device's Settings app

2. Motion & Fitness Access

For accurate trip detection:

  1. When prompted, allow access to Motion & Fitness data
  2. This helps MileLog distinguish between different types of movement

3. Notifications (Optional)

Enable notifications to:

  • Get alerts when trips are detected
  • Receive reminders to classify trips
  • Stay informed about your mileage totals

Setting Your Preferences

Vehicle Information

  1. Go to Settings > Vehicles
  2. Tap "Add Vehicle"
  3. Enter your vehicle details:
    • Make and model
    • Year
    • Starting odometer reading (optional)
    • Fuel efficiency (optional)

Mileage Rates

MileLog comes pre-configured with current IRS and CRA rates, but you can customize them:

  1. Go to Settings > Rates
  2. Select the rate type (Business, Medical, Charity, etc.)
  3. Enter your custom rate if needed

Recording Your First Trip

Automatic Trip Recording

  1. Simply drive as you normally would
  2. MileLog will detect when you're driving and record the trip
  3. After your trip ends, you'll receive a notification (if enabled)
  4. Open the app to review and classify the trip

Manual Trip Entry

If you need to add a trip manually:

  1. Tap the "+" button on the Trips screen
  2. Enter trip details:
    • Date and time
    • Starting location
    • Ending location
    • Trip purpose
    • Distance
  3. Tap "Save" to add the trip to your log

Classifying Trips

After a trip is recorded:

  1. Open the app and go to the Trips tab
  2. Tap on the trip you want to classify
  3. Select the appropriate category (Business, Personal, etc.)
  4. Add any notes or tags
  5. Tap "Save" to update the trip

Generating Reports

To create a mileage report:

  1. Go to the Reports tab
  2. Select the report type (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, etc.)
  3. Choose the date range
  4. Tap "Generate Report"
  5. Use the share button to export, print, or email your report
